Are You Suffering from Allergic Asthma?

Spring is here, which means you may be experiencing symptoms of seasonal allergies. Pollen allergies can have a big impact on your health. causing you to feel congestion in your throat as well as eye irritation. While allergies can be disruptive to your life, individuals who suffer from asthma can experience more catastrophic side effects that can trigger potentially life-threatening symptoms. Allergic asthma affects over half of patients suffering from asthma.

What do I need to know about allergic asthma?

Allergic asthma occurs when allergens trigger the beginning of an asthma attack. Similarly to an allergy attack, the throat begins to swell and you will experience congestion, which leads to difficulty breathing. Breathing challenges can trigger an allergic reaction, including wheezing and coughing. Swelling in the throat and airway is triggered by overproduction of immunoglobulin, which can lead to an asthma attack beginning.

Diagnosis & Treatment for Allergic Asthma

AFC Urgent Care will be able to perform tests to determine your allergens, as well as determining whether or not your allergies are contributing to asthma attacks, as well as providing ways to avoid exposure and reduce the effects of allergens on your body. Common triggers that can lead to asthma include dust and pet dander, but the two most common are:

  • Mold: mold is a common allergen that can affect you both inside and out, growing on any moist surface. It is most common in dark, cool basements, poorly ventilated bathrooms and wet grass covered in mildew. Because of its versatility, mold can affect you all year, contributing to allergy symptoms and reactions.
  • Pollen: pollen is one of the most common allergens in the spring and summer, when pollination occurs in the plants, grass and trees. If you suffer from pollen allergies, you may experience more symptoms in the morning as pollination occurs. To prevent reactions, avoid spending a lot of time outdoors on high pollen count days, removing outerwear and shoes immediately after returning indoors and wearing protective masks to filter out pollen.
