Don't drop from dehydration!

The last thing on our minds when we are enjoying our summer at the beach or outside is rarely “Wow I hope I prepared myself to not get dehydrated today. However, we at AFC would like to encourage you to be mindful of the dangers of being dehydrated as the summer progresses.

How dehydration happens

The human body is over 65% water; when we exert water from our bodies from normal activities like sweating & using the bathroom our bodies need to replace the water that is lost. When we don’t give ourselves enough water to match the amount of water leaving the body, we get dehydrated.

Dangers of Dehydration

Thousands of people die from dehydration in America every year. If the body is in mild dehydration you may feel some symptoms such as:

  • Dry mouth
  • urge to drink
  • a headache
  • dizziness
  • nausea

These symptoms can easily be overlooked but it is important to stop dehydration early before it progresses to a moderate or severe level. A severe level of dehydration may include:

  • High pulse
  • fatigue
  • fainting/blacking out
  • no tears or sweat

These symptoms of dehydration should not be taken lightly & should be treated immediately.

How to beat dehydration

The Easiest way to beat dehydration is to just think ahead in your day, ask yourself questions such as: “Am I going to be near water? Do I need to bring water? Will, I be sweating or exercising?” When you think ahead in your day you can eliminate being stuck somewhere with no water & running the risk of being dehydrated. If you aren’t a person who feels drinking a lot of water every day is possible for you another way to beat dehydration is filing your diet with water based foods. These foods can be :

  • Watermelon
  • celery
  • strawberry
  • Grapes

If you are suffering from Dehydration please come down to AFC Urgent Care Springfield. We will treat you & get you on your feet in no time!
